Choose the Volume Format, assign a name to the disk, and then click Erase to format the disk
or partition.
Partition
Select a hard drive from the
sources list to see the Partition
tab.
To partition a disk, choose
a Volume Scheme, which is a
description of how you want to
partition the disk, and then set
the size of each partition. Click
Apply to create the partitions or
click Revert to start the process
over. Partitioning a disk erases
all the data it contains.

RAID
RAID stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks. A RAID is a set of multiple disks that
act as one individual disk, which increases storage capacity and increases disk performance. The
RAID tab, shown in the following illustration, allows you to create a RAID by dragging disks
you want to include in the RAID from the sources list to the RAID list.
Securely Erase Disks and Partitions
Even after you have formatted a disk, the data on the disk is still readable and recoverable
by most disk recovery applications. Disk Utility provides options for making certain the data
that was on your disk cannot be retrieved.
