The options you have are to erase the disk??™s data quickly or completely. Quickly erasing
only takes a few minutes (DVDs take longer than CDs since they are much larger in terms of
capacity), whereas completely erasing can take an hour or so. When the erasure is finished, you
can use your disk like it was new again.
Use Disk Utility to Create and Burn Disk Images
Creating disk images is an excellent way to archive data or make backup copies of CDs and
DVDs. Disk Utility helps you create disk images, either from scratch or from another disk, and
helps you to burn your disk images to a CD or DVD.
Create Blank Disk Images
To create a custom blank disk image, click the New Image button in the toolbar of Disk Utility.
Create your disk image using these options:
CHAPTER 23: Getting Under the Hood 473
?– Save As and Where Give the disk image a descriptive name and choose a location to
save it to from the Where menu.
?– Volume Name, Volume Size, and Volume Format The name of the volume doesn??™t
have to be the same name as the disk image, but it may help alleviate confusion about
what the disk image contains.
