474 How to Do Everything: Mac
Create a Disk Image from an Existing Disk
My favorite thing about Disk Utility is being able to make perfect copies of my CDs, ensuring
that if the original is scratched beyond recognition or smashed with a hammer by the little
???angels??? in my house, I can simply burn a new identical copy of the original to a blank CD.
To create an image from any disk, whether a hard drive, CD, or DVD, click the disk in the
sources list and choose File | New | Disk Image from disk name.
Make your choices from the Image Format and Encryption menus, and then click Save.
Burn Images to Disks
This job couldn??™t be much simpler.
Choose Images | Burn, browse your hard drive for the disk image you want to burn, choose
the disk image, and click the Burn button. At this point you are prompted to insert a disc.
When you do so, the disk image is burned to the physical disk, whether it be a CD or DVD.
Disk Utility lets you know if it foresees any problems, such as the disk not having enough space
to perform the burn.
Summary
You??™re ready to handle most of your disk maintenance and repair needs.
