"How to Do Everything: Mac"

From the Time Machine preferences pane, follow these
steps:
1. Time Machine is turned off by default, so turn it on by
clicking the slider switch to ON.
2. Click the Choose Backup Disk button to choose a
hard drive to use for your backups.

3. Choose the disk you want to use and click the Use for Backup button. Your disk (called
Backup in my case) shows up in the Time Machine preferences pane as the backup
destination. The amount of space available on the drive is given, as well as the previous
backup dates, if any.
4. Click the Options button in the preferences pane. The dialog box that opens shows which
volumes you??™ve chosen to not back up.
This does work against normal conventions for backup utilities; in most of them you
select which volumes you do want to back up, but it??™s just the opposite in Time Machine.
5. Click the + or ??“ button to, respectively, add or remove volumes from the list.
6. Click the Done button when you??™re finished and Time Machine will begin its countdown
to the next backup, which happens in 120 seconds.
